One of Central’s two teams beat Central Park BC on a neutral green at Old Dagenham, while the other Central team beat Fords Sports BC on a neutral green at Wanstead BC to set an all Central clash in the final, to be played on a non-neutral green at Wanstead Central
Wonderful Week For Wanstead Central Ladies
Last week saw five fabulous results for the ladies.
On Monday they well beat Buckhurst Hill in a Colbert Cup match at home.
On Wednesday two teams travelled to Loughton and played the Colbert Cup and a FDL match with winning results from both teams.
On Thursday Buckhurst Hill was again their target in the Albert Crabbe Shield match. The home team made a positive contribution winning by 10 shots which more than covered the away team’s very good result of only losing by 2 shots on the last end. We now progress to the next round in this competition to play Falcon on Tuesday 28th August.
The icing on the cake was the Area Final of the Top Club in which we again met Buckhurst Hill on a neutral green (a last minute arrangement!) Winning on 3 of the 4 rinks meant we now go forward on the 1st September to meet the winners of “A” area – Clockhouse, on the neutral green of “Old Dagenham”.
Top Ladies
Ten of Central’s ladies beat Buckhurst Hill in the area final of the ECWBA Top Club competition. Comfortable wins in the triples and fours more than offset a loss in the pairs. As a result it was up to Lesley Cowell to wrap up the 3-1 victory by winning 21-19 in a hard fought, topsy-turvy match that took almost as long as the other games to complete.
The ladies go on to the semi-finals in a few weeks.
Not to be outdone by the men, the ladies celebrate in Olympic style
Parks Fours
Colin Jones, Dave Waters, Paul Woodford and Paul Whellams beat a rink from Fords Sports to reach the final of the London Parks Fours
Congratulations
Well done Isabel Anderson, winning by an outstanding margin of 22 to 9 over her opponent from Chelmsford in the Area Final of the Officers Cup on Monday 13th August.
She now joins Maureen Norgate – also an Area Finalist in the Champions of Champions competition – to play in the Unfinished Finals at the Falcon B.C. on Friday 24th August.
We wish them both every success.
Open Tournament
Once again it was great to see bowlers from near and far basking in the sun, and playing a few ends as well, in search of the cash prize.
The round robin stages produced a tight final between Buckhurst Hill BC and Connaught BC, with only one in it going into the last end The Connaught Club prevailed. From left to right: Tim Mould, Yvonne Bates, John Gray and Janet Gray, plus Wanstead Central’s President Joyce and tournament official Jim

Olympic Thoughts
With Team GB performing so well, and a lot of the action taking place just a few miles away, is it time to follow their lead and modernise our name?
So from next year should we go by the name of Team WC?
Ok, perhaps not 😉
Cribb Triples v Ilford
Central travel to Ilford for the last round of the league stages.
Having come out on top in all the previous league matches it was a disappointment to loose on all rinks. It won’t stop Central progressing to the final semis, but fair play to Ilford for putting us in our place.
Cordell Trophy dual victories
Team 1 wins narrowly away against Old Dagenham
Team 2 wins at home against Woodford
